I’m slowly warming up after a full one week hiatus from blogging. I have four blog posts drafted so be prepared… I’ll explain the hiatus more in one of those posts.
I received the note in the center of the image above on Monday of this week, over a month since I sent the original note of thanks featured on the left. My response sent today is on the right.
I try to be very thoughtful each day and reflect on the people who made an impact on me outside my friends and family – the latter have an inherent impact.
Rather, I make sure to think about the “unsung” – the people who I interact with that make my life better but often go unnoticed and are surely underappreciated.
I’ve dubbed this cohort the “unsung” — the people who do not get accolades often but do their jobs remarkably well, with passion for their craft, and a desire to achieve the ultimate outcome.
I’ve found these folks in so many places: meat-counter employees at Safeway and police officers on the street, snowboard salesmen at Evo, insurance company employees for Allstate (which is what is covered in the exchange above).
I spent a considerable amount of time after my last cruise writing a letter about how my stateroom attendant Henrique exemplified the best in customer care. He was acknowledged for this letter on his massive cruise ship within his massive company. I hope it plays a role as he attempts to move up the ranks and is gunning for a promotion.
It’s easy to meet expectations.
It’s not so easy to 1) not take things for granted or 2) stop and take a moment out of your life to thank the people that just had an impact on yours…even in what would be considered a trivial way.
Everyone wants to hear they are doing a good job and maybe more importantly, that they stand out…even if just to you.
And everyone wants to feel like they’ve had an impact.
I can’t think of a single instance where taking the small amount of time to recognize someone and thank them would do any harm in the world at all…perhaps its the cure we need.
